On a beautiful sunny weekday in downtown Sacramento the streets are lined with busy business people going office building to office building. But as soon as the sun sets on this particular week, the Sacramento Convention Center, located in the heart of downtown, hundreds of tattoo artists will begin to file into town for the All American Tattoo Festival.
Held on June 16-18th, the 5th Annual All American Tattoo Festival is a quaint look at an alternative lifestyle. Compared to other West Coast conventions such as the Long Beach International Festival, this convention is particularly small. With only 76 tattoo booths and 16 vendor booths, the festival it is less than half the size of its competition. But at conventions, it’s not quality that counts – it’s quantity.
In Sacramento this weekend are some of the country’s, and the world’s, most famous & well respected artists in the world of tattoo. With such big names of the industry as Ethan Morgan, Robert Hernandez, S. Pili Mo’o, Shige, and so many others, there was an atmosphere of great talent encompassing the entire hall.
As well as 76 of the world’s greatest tattoo artists, there were also wonderful performances. The star of this year’s convention was Lucky Diamond Rich, the world’s most tattooed man. Rich is entirely covered in tattoos from head to toe, and has the most brilliant silver teeth. He is the true meaning of versatility, going from posing for a picture in a designer suit made of the most beautiful cranberry-merlot silk to a kilt and Doc Marten’s riding atop a 6 foot tall unicycle while juggling meat cleavers. “I’ve been performing all my life, and tattoo has made my life wonderful. Thank you!” he says as he leaves the stage. Truly magnificent.
In between performances the crowds were delighted to a wide range of rock, played loud enough to terrify the United Methodists Convention in the next hall. With artist specialties’ ranging from traditional hand-done tatau, black and gray, color work, traditional old school, new school, and any genre in between, the All American Tattoo Festival has something for everyone. Just don’t let it’s size fool you. |
